Abortion Care Resources Accessible in Trigger States

No one can provide abortion care that goes against state laws in trigger states. However, Abortion Finder can help you find providers in nearby states—and as of July 2022, it is not illegal to travel to seek an abortion. The directory will also allow you to search by how far into your pregnancy you are, so you can find providers that will cater to your specific needs.

The website also displays additional helpful information, such as travel funds, abortion funds, and legal and medical information about what types of abortion are open to you.

The organization takes your safety seriously too. All providers listed have been vetted by Abortion Finder to ensure they are not crisis pregnancy centers. It also has a partnership with ANSIRH, a research organization associated with the University of California at San Francisco, to ensure it is showing you the most providers possible.

Plan C is an organization with the specific mission of making access to medical abortion easier. It operates under fiscal management from the National Women’s Health Network, a non-profit dedicated to improving access to care. Since it's a third-party organization, not an online pharmacy, it's constantly monitoring the latest regulations in trigger states. That’s important since abortion laws in trigger states are changing so rapidly right now. 

Plan C will help you understand the laws in your state and connect you with online pharmacies or telehealth prescribers that can deliver abortion pills to you safely and legally. Some states have banned medical abortion via telehealth; if that’s the case in your state, Plan C is still helpful because it can help you find a nearby in-person prescriber or direct you to Aid Access, an international prescriber.

If you can’t afford the cost of the abortion procedure or the cost of traveling out-of-state, abortion fund organizations may be able to help and The National Network of Abortion Funds will help you find those funds. All you have to do is enter your location, some information about who you are, and what kinds of funds you're looking for.

The directory lists a variety of abortion funds, including large national ones like the Brigid Alliance and smaller state or regional ones. Some funds, like Indigenous Women Rising, also cater to specific marginalized communities. The website also provides some helpful information on how to apply for the funds, though you will have to contact and apply to the fun on your own.

The National Abortion Federation (NAF) helps improve abortion access all over the country, including in trigger states. If you need help figuring out your options, you can call the hotline (1-800-772-9100) Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST or on weekends from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST.

When you call, you can ask any questions you like and the counselor on the other end of the line will also let you know if you qualify for a case manager. Case managers can offer you hands-on support in finding a provider, as well as abortion and travel funds. Even if you don’t qualify for a case manager, the NAF hotline will walk you through your options and help connect you to other abortion resources that might be a fit.

If you live somewhere where abortion is banned or heavily restricted, The Brigid Alliance may be able to help you travel out of state. Aimed at people who are 15 weeks pregnant or more, the fund will help cover the cost of travel, lodging, and childcare so you can go get your abortion out-of-state. You can ask for a referral to the Brigid Alliance for funding as soon as you book your abortion appointment at one of its partner clinics.

However, it does not help cover the cost of the procedure itself and you can only receive the funding if you seek care at one of its partner clinics. These clinics are located in New York, New Mexico, New Jersey, Colorado, and Washington D.C.

Accessing abortion care if you live in a trigger states can be scary. Although anti-choice lawmakers frequently say that people who get an abortion will not face charges, at least 60 people have faced charges related to abortion since 2000. So if you're worried about what is or is not legal in your state, the Repro Legal Helpline may be able to help.

It is run by the nonprofit If/When/How: Lawyering for Reproductive Justice and is dedicated to helping you get the abortion care you need while following the law. You can find clear answers written by lawyers to the most common questions (like “Can I get arrested for buying abortion pills online?”) on the helpline's website or you can call the helpline directly at 844-868-2812. If the line is busy, you'll have the option to leave a message and someone will reach out within two days. You can also ask a question via a secure online form.

The Repro Legal Helpline also provides assistance and guidance to people under the age of 18 who need to access an abortion but cannot tell their parents. In many states, this requires a process known as judicial bypass—and the lawyers at this nonprofit can help walk you through it. It also never asks you about your immigration status—and can provide specific information about accessing abortion care as an immigrant.

If you're dealing with an unplanned pregnancy and want to consider your options, it can be difficult to know who to talk to, especially with the rise of crisis pregnancy centers. But that's what makes All Options so helpful: this nonprofit with talk you through all your options—abortion, adoption, and keeping the baby—without judgment and it will support whatever decision you make. It can also provide you with helpful information once you've made your choice.

You can find helpful information both on its website or you can call its talkline at 1-888-493-0092. The helpline is available 24 hours a day from the U.S. and Canada and it’s staffed by trained peers who can listen to you and provide helpful resources. It also operates an abortion fund for people located in Indiana.

If you or your family ever need anyone to talk to about your abortion, Exhale Pro-Voice might be a good resource. It offers mental health support to people who have had an abortion, as well as their partners, family members, and loved ones via text-line (617-749-2948) weekdays from 3-9 p.m.; Saturdays from 1-9 p.m.; and Sundays from 3-7 p.m. Pacific time.

The organization also runs twice-monthly post-abortion support groups online and it offers a variety of other resources—including self-care materials—to support you pre- and post-abortion. The only drawbacks are that it does not operate a phone line and its text line only operates during certain hours of the day.

Regardless of where you live, if you're experiencing a miscarriage or complications from a medical abortion, you can call the Miscarriage and Abortion Hotline for medical advice and guidance. The line is staffed by experienced clinicians who can help you understand what to expect when a pregnancy ends and help you determine if you need in-person care. The hotline (1-833-246-2632) is available by phone or text daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. in all continental U.S. time zones. 

When you call or text the line, you may need to leave a message. However, a clinician will respond to you within an hour. The doctor won’t ask your name or where you’re calling from to preserve your anonymity.

Although Planned Parenthood is often at the center of the abortion debate, it doesn't just provide abortions (though it does provide in-clinic and abortion pills at some locations). It also offers preventative, reproductive, and sexual health screenings for all genders. The organization is still active in all 50 states, including trigger states. 

To serve marginalized and low-income communities, it also provides translation, low-cost self-pay options, and culturally-sensitive care. The organization is also in-network with many insurance providers, including Medicaid in some states. It also provides grants and some free services.

However, there are limited clinics in some states. Mississippi, for example, only has one clinic. Still, even if there’s no Planned Parenthood close to you, the organization in your state may be able to connect you with affordable local healthcare resources.
