However, for hot sleepers, night sweats and overheating can be common problems that can lead to restless nights and a lack of quality sleep, and the wrong mattress can exacerbate the problem. Cooling mattresses make it easier to help regulate body heat while you sleep. heat. Brandon Peters, MD, a board-certified doctor in neurology and sleep medicine, explains that there is “evidence that a cooler sleep environment helps to promote deep sleep. This is important for the repair of the body's tissues and may help with growth.” To find the best cooling mattresses on the market, we researched dozens of cooling mattresses and evaluated them for material, price, comfort, and warranty. We also tested six cooling mattresses for four weeks. We rated them from 1 (would not recommend) to 5 (highly recommend based on testers' dominant sleeping positions, whether overall sleep has improved, how easy it was to change positions at night, and how restful they were when they woke up. We are continually testing the best mattresses on the market and will update you accordingly with our findings. After testing this mattress for four weeks, it was very clear that this cooling mattress was worth the hype (and price tag) due to how easy it was to not only fall asleep comfortably but how easily we fell back asleep after waking up and/or readjusting throughout the night. Often when moving around at night, mattresses can sag or droop, but that’s not a problem with this cooling mattress. Not to mention, regardless of which position we slept in, this cooling mattress was super supportive, long-lasting, and of course, helped us maintain proper temperature regulation throughout the night. The Wave Hybrid mattress uses what Casper calls “Snow Technology,” which essentially means that the mattress keeps you 6 degrees cooler at night. If that wasn’t cool enough, there are continuous ergonomic zones that are built in with gel pods that give you perfect spinal alignment and wondrous full-body relief. While the cooling mattress is a little firmer, it’s not so hard it hurts your joints. We could roll over easily throughout the night while feeling completely relaxed, whether we were on our backs, sides, or stomachs. It uses what Casper calls “HeatDelete™ Bands and AirScape™ 3” technology which helps prevent overheating before it can happen, and a QuickCool™ Cover, which gives added cooling sensation! Available in all sizes ranging from a Twin XL to California King, while the price tag is a little steep, we feel after experiencing it that it’s very worth it. This mattress also uses gel pods to help lift your spine, top foams to add to the softness so you can doze off peacefully, and resilient springs which help to keep it firm and taught, so you don’t sag, which makes sense since we didn’t wake up with any muscle aches, and felt more relaxed and rejuvenated upon opening our eyes. You can choose to have a free no-contact delivery, a 10-year limited warranty, and, best of all? You can try it yourself for 100 nights risk-free to make sure it’s the perfect fit for you. Together, these features focus on back and joint pain, as well as spinal support. What really promotes its cooling nature is the mattress’s individual comfort coils that respond and contour to the movements of your body in order to decrease motion transfer while also increasing airflow for better breathability. Saatva provides three different types of firmness, including plush soft, luxury firm, and firm, to match customers’ specific sleep needs. According to the website, most customers go with the luxury firm because it fits most sleep styles—and it doesn’t hurt that the quality or cost does not change based on chosen firmness. Dr. Peters says that the benefits of a cooling mattress “may be evident fairly quickly. One night of recovery sleep may ease the effects of sleep deprivation. As we are conditioned to our environment, this may take more time. It might be expected that most people would adjust within weeks to a few months.” Price at time of publication: $1,795 Materials: CertiPUR-US certified foams, organic cotton cover, recycled steel coils, and natural flame retardant barrier | Available Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Split King, Cal King, Split Cal King | Firmness: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm | Thickness: 11.5 inches and 14.5 inches Best Budget Sealy Cocoon Chill by Sealy Courtesy of Sealy View On Cocoonbysealy.com Pros 10-year warranty Excellent value Cons Trial period is only 10 days Sealy’s Cocoon Chill provides a quality cooling mattress on a budget. The mattress has four layers: the essential support layer is a highly robust foam that focuses on resiliency; the responsive comfort foam reduces motion transfer, thereby preventing sinking; the perfect fit memory foam adapts and supports your body size, shape, and sleep position; and the cooling cover works to absorb and dissipate heat. All these layers help to create a breathable, soft mattress that takes away the heat and sweat of a bad night’s sleep. Since the Cocoon Chill is a firmer mattress, available in medium-soft and extra firm, it’s the most ideal for back and stomach sleepers. Dr. Mascarinas consulted the Verywell Health team on which beds to shortlist for the review. As a baseline, she recommended a medium-firm mattress since “you don’t want to sink in. It should cradle the hips and shoulders. All of the mattresses should fit these criteria.” For this test, 10 different people were assigned to review one bed each for one month straight. Before reviewing, they were required to note their pre-existing sleeping habits and style so that it could be used as a benchmark. Within these notes, reviewers had to note things like whether they slept on their stomach, back, or side; if they usually wake up with joint aches; if there’s any pain or discomfort whatsoever while sleeping on their current mattress; and if their back feels painful or out of place. The tests included a two-week break-in period. This allowed for the new mattress to settle and for the reviewer to note any chemical smells upon unboxing. Within this time, they also recorded (on a five-point scale where five meant “excellent” in any category) how supported they felt as they slept, how much they moved throughout the night, and how comfortable they were overall. The same process was repeated for the following two weeks with broader categories relating to sleep quality overall. This included recording if/how much their sleep had improved overall, how they feel upon waking in the morning, and if there were any resulting joint or back pain improvements. We also used researched popular cooling mattresses and evaluated them based on consumer insights, online reviews, and market trends to review any selections that weren’t tested by us. That being said, we are continually testing new cooling mattresses to update this roundup so you can know that your cooling mattress pick is the best, up-to-date selection you can make. What to Look for in a Cooling Mattress Ventilation When you have a well-ventilated mattress, it makes for better airflow, resulting in a more breathable mattress. This helps to take away heat and sweat during sleep. A perforated mattress topper for ventilation may help further cool you while you sleep and is a great option for anyone on a budget or for those looking to purchase an adjustable bed. Comfort Making the switch to a cooling mattress can’t just be about the cooling effect. You have to make sure that other factors, such as firmness, springs, and foam, are comfortable for you. Fortunately, many online retailers offer a trial period and warranty, so you can feel good knowing you're getting the best option for you. Maintenance Mattress toppers and mattress protectors can help extend the life of your mattress. Plus, they make cleaning easy, so any mattress mishaps won't mean throwing the whole product away. If you're looking to make a big investment in a cooling mattress, think about purchasing a protector or topper to help keep your mattress safe. Frequently Asked Questions How do cooling mattresses work? Even though there are plenty of cooling mattress options on the market right now, they tend to follow the same basic principles, according to Gregory Funk, D.C., a chiropractor and owner of Ideal Health Chiropractic in Denver, Colorado. “Essentially, cooling mattresses use various types of materials like gel-infused memory foam or cool-to-the-touch materials to draw hot air away from the body and absorb it,” he tells Verywell Health. “These materials should help your body stay cool throughout the night.”According to RJ Burr, D.C., a chiropractor with Start Sleeping and founder of REACH Rehab + Chiropractic Performance Center in Plymouth, Michigan, additional technologies used in cooling mattresses include “multiple layers of foam to help promote air circulation” and “variations on foam that allow for heat to disperse.” Similarly, as Jason Loth, D.C., a chiropractor and sleep expert at Nevy Health in Mesa, Arizona, points out, some cooling mattresses have a top layer made with copper-infused foam. “The copper's conductivity assists in the transfer of heat to help you sleep cooler and better,” he says. So how is that different from regular/non-cooling mattresses? “Material in some mattresses can act as an insulator, keeping the heat and humidity from escaping much like a winter jacket,” says Kevin Lees, D.C., a chiropractor and the manager of auditing and quality of The Joint Chiropractic. “Cooling mattresses can help body heat escape and can be breathable.” Can a cooling mattress help you sleep better? Cooling mattresses can help people whose sleep is consistently disrupted by night sweats or simply feeling too hot to sleep comfortably, Funk explains. “Of course, the mattress won't make your night sweats disappear entirely, but the mattress can help bring you some relief,” he notes. Along the same lines, Burr says that a cooling mattress can be “an absolute game-changer” for someone with poor sleep quality attributed (at least in part) to sleeping hot. “The optimum room temperature is between 60 and 67 degrees,” he explains. “Unfortunately, some mattresses—especially memory foam—compress and trap your body heat. The trapped body heat can cause you to get hot and can negatively affect your quality of sleep.” So how, exactly, does our body temperature change throughout the day, and what does that mean for our quality of sleep? “A person's body temperature will naturally peak and decline during a 24-hour period,” Loth explains. “The higher temperatures will be in the late afternoon and the lowest temperatures at approximately 5 a.m. Sleep usually begins when your body temperature drops, so a cooler room can encourage a person to fall asleep faster, stay asleep, and have a more restful sleep.” How does our body temperature change throughout the day, and what does that mean for our quality of sleep? “A person's body temperature will naturally peak and decline during a 24-hour period,” Loth explains. “The higher temperatures will be in the late afternoon and the lowest temperatures at approximately 5 a.m. Sleep usually begins when your body temperature drops, so a cooler room can encourage a person to fall asleep faster, stay asleep, and have a more restful sleep.” What the Experts Say “Some materials do not allow for optimum sleep temperatures.
