Data suggests that 1 in 7 women suffer from Postpartum Depression (PPD), yet research also indicates that we are only properly identifying and diagnosing 30% of the women who are truly suffering. Left untreated, mood symptoms during pregnancy and the postpartum period are profoundly painful for mom, rob her of what can be a very special time bonding with her newborn, and can have lasting negative effects on mom and her baby. These are some of the many reasons I am so devoted to increasing awareness and reducing the stigma surrounding postpartum mental illness.
