Creating a positive work environment is valuable in every healthcare setting, from medical office to clinic, hospital, or long-term care facility. As healthcare professionals focus on healing and supporting their patients, they must not forget that their coworkers also need to be nurtured in the work environment.

Having a positive attitude is the first step to creating a positive working environment. Managers must have a positive attitude in order to be able to encourage positive attitudes among staff members.

Words don’t mean anything without the actions behind them. Let your actions speak louder than your words. Your positive attitude is reflected in the way you act and the way you work. Don’t just talk about it, be about it.

Having a positive attitude allows you to see positive solutions when faced with challenges. When you stop focusing on the negative you will be more open to seeing a way to resolve the problem versus just sitting around and complaining. A positive attitude is key for having positive outcomes.

If you don’t love what you do, it is almost impossible to have a positive attitude at work. Of course, everyone will experience ups and downs on a regular basis in any work environment including the medical office. The medical office is a complex workplace and sometimes things don’t go as planned. If you love what you do, it will show and it will make a difference to your employees and patients.

Your patients deserve the best staff to provide them with the best care possible. When your employees have a positive attitude, your patients will feel it when they walk in the door. Patients, especially when they are not feeling well, rely on the staff of the medical practice to make them feel safe, secure and cared for. A positive attitude by the staff creates a warm and inviting atmosphere for the patients.

Making light of stressful situations is another characteristic of positive people. Even though we are all here to perform our jobs to the best of our abilities it doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy ourselves and each other’s company. It is said that laughter is the best medicine. Teams tend to thrive better and are more positive when they can laugh at work.


Positive Feedback

Effective feedback is communication that motivates and encourages employees in a positive way. Positive feedback should be:

  • Accurate - give credit where credit is due
  • Relevant – make sure it relates to performance objectives
  • Timely – provide feedback regularly instead of waiting for a yearly evaluation
  • Specific – identify the exact reason or circumstance for the feedback

Positive feedback is not about saying nice words to an employee. Positive feedback is about providing communication that acknowledges positive performance and actions or that encourages improvement. If executed properly, positive feedback will reinforce desired behaviors and provide resources to boost weaknesses into strengths.

The success of the medical office is not just about giving positive feedback. Getting positive feedback from patients and staff are important for the medical office to continue to gain desired results.
