A Potential Source for Calcium and Magnesium

Dolomite, also known as calcaire Dolomitique, dolomita, and Dolomitic limestone, is a type of limestone supplement containing magnesium and calcium carbonate. Dolomite also contains trace amounts of other minerals including chlorine, phosphorus, and potassium. However, it is most commonly used for the calcium and magnesium it contains.

Dolomite was first discovered by a French geologist named Deodat Gratet de Dolomieu in 1791. After this point, dolomite has been commonly used by farmers and gardeners to add magnesium to the soil. It has also been used to add calcium and magnesium to animal feeds. There is not much evidence indicating dolomite is an ideal option for obtaining supplemental calcium and magnesium due to the presence of heavy metals such as aluminum, arsenic, lead, mercury, and nickel. 

Health Benefits

Benefits of dolomite include the supplement serving as a good source of calcium and magnesium for individuals who are lacking these minerals in their diet. Despite these benefits of dolomite, it is not considered a safe supplement for use in adults or children.

Dolomite is not recommended for the treatment of any physical or psychological conditions or symptoms, as it has not been proven safe, nor has there been research proving any benefits.

Oral dolomite supplements contain five times as much magnesium and five-eighths as much calcium as traditional limestone. Dolomite supplements are available in tablets and chewable wafers. These high concentrations of minerals cause dolomite to be unsafe and difficult for most individuals to consume.

One study has shown dolomite supplements improve bone metabolism and calcium levels in rats. However, these findings have not been applied to humans, as dolomite is still largely considered unsafe for human use. There is not much evidence indicating dolomite is an ideal option for obtaining supplemental calcium and magnesium due to the presence of heavy metals such as aluminum, arsenic, lead, mercury, and nickel.

Possible Side Effects

Like other calcium and magnesium mineral supplements, dolomite has been known to cause stomach irritation, constipation, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Dolomite should not be taken in large amounts or for long periods of time. Dolomite should also not be combined with other types of calcium and magnesium supplements due to the potential for an overabundance of calcium and magnesium entering the bloodstream.

Individuals who are allergic to dolomite should not take dolomite supplements. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take dolomite as this places the fetus at risk for heavy metal contamination from the supplement.

Children experience more sensitivities to heavy metal exposure than adults do, making it imperative that children avoid taking dolomite. Dolomite has been noted to potentially contain toxic amounts of lead, which easily cause lead poisoning in children.

Individuals with heart conditions, specifically a heart block, should not take dolomite. The addition of magnesium to the bloodstream of these individuals often causes further cardiac complications.

Individuals with an overactive or underactive parathyroid gland should not take dolomite. The parathyroid gland controls the production and release of calcium in the blood. Taking additional calcium through a dolomite supplement will disturb the balance for these individuals and it is not safe.

Individuals with kidney disease will be harmed by the addition of calcium and magnesium as it is difficult to process such minerals in high quantities.

Dosage and Preparation

Despite dolomite being available in supplement form and possessing natural minerals, no dosage recommendations have been made due to safety concerns.

This supplement is not appropriate for use in children, the elderly, or a healthy adult population. This is due to the presence of heavy metals such as aluminum, arsenic, lead, mercury, and nickel.

Individuals who require supplementation of calcium and magnesium should consult their doctor and explore alternative methods which are safer and cater to their unique circumstances.

It is important to monitor your intake of foods rich in calcium and/or magnesium when taking any supplement, as the combination may result in an excessive amount of those minerals in the bloodstream. An excess of calcium and magnesium in the bloodstream is especially harmful, as these two minerals must maintain a careful balance to ensure healthy and regulated body processes.

What to Look For

When buying dolomite supplements, it is important to read labels to be aware of what is contained in each. Consult your doctor regarding whether it is safe to take dolomite alongside certain prescription medications. This is especially important since there are no Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines regarding a healthy dosage or maximum dosage for dolomite.

Dolomite contains no animal, dairy, or grain products, meaning every marketable form of dolomite is considered vegan.

Bottles of dolomite you purchase should not make any claims regarding the efficacy of the supplement, its ability to treat symptoms, or cure any condition. According to the FDA, it is not legal to market a dietary supplement product as a treatment or cure for a specific disease, or to alleviate the symptoms of a disease. Claims such as these should be an immediate red flag that the supplement is not coming from a trustworthy source.

Dolomite has a negative interaction with diuretics, also known as water pills. Water pills increase the amount of calcium in the body in order to flush fluid from the body, which can cause an overabundance of calcium if taken with dolomite. Taking dolomite may decrease the effectiveness of thyroid medication and antibiotics if they are taken within two hours of each other. Be mindful of timing if you choose to take these two medications simultaneously.

Alternative ways to seek an increase in calcium and magnesium is by adding these minerals to your food. Foods such as spinach, almonds, tofu, okra, Swiss chard, beans, and nuts are rich in both calcium and magnesium.

Foods primarily rich in calcium include broccoli, kale, cabbage, figs, and oranges, among others. Foods primarily rich in magnesium include whole wheat bread, avocado, bananas, oatmeal, and raisins, among others.

Is dolomite good for leg cramps?

It is true the addition of calcium and magnesium to your diet assists with healthy muscle contractions and can assist with decreasing leg cramps. However, dolomite is not recommended for this purpose. If you have specific concerns regarding leg cramps which do not subside after adding calcium and magnesium to your diet, consult your doctor.

Is dolomite safe for use in dogs?

Some dogs benefit from the addition of calcium to their diet to build strong bones and teeth. However, most dogs should receive adequate amounts of calcium from high-quality pet food. There are chewable dolomite tablets available for use in dogs, however, your dog’s veterinarian should be consulted before adding anything to your dog’s diet.

Where is dolomite found?

Dolomite is frequently found in sedimentary and metamorphic rock structures, which is where it is often taken from to form supplements. These rock structures can be found in Canada, Africa, and parts of Europe.
