What Is the Average Size of a Flaccid Penis?

Putting Penis Size Into Proper Perspective

Though men tend to spend an inordinate amount of time preoccupied with the size of their erect penis and how it performs, you'll spend the majority of your life in a flaccid state.

When your penis is flaccid, that means that it is soft and hanging loosely or limply. You are not physically aroused and, as a result, there is no blood coursing through this appendage. Put simply, a flaccid penis is a penis at rest.

Average Length of a Flaccid Penis

Based on a study of over 15,500 mature men, these are the average penis dimensions under normal conditions:

  • The average length of a flaccid penis when it is hanging down loosely is between 3.0 to 4.25 inches.
  • The average flaccid penis circumference is 3.3 to 4 inches.
  • The average length of a stretched flaccid penis is 4.5 to 6 inches.
  • The average length of an erect penis is 4.5 to 6 inches, the same as for the stretched flaccid average.
  • The average circumference of an erect penis is 4.1 to 5.0 inches.

However, cold or exhaustion can make the penis temporarily smaller.

As with the erect penis, there are as many different varieties of flaccid penis lengths, girths, and appearances out there as there are men in the world. Which is why—despite any urge you may have to compare yourself to others—you shouldn't ever feel self-conscious or inadequate in any way.

From Flaccid to Erect Sizes

If you're trying to guess how much your penis will grow when it becomes erect based on the size of your flaccid penis, you should know that there is no relationship between the length of a flaccid penis and an erect penis.

You can't easily know if a man is a "grower or a shower." Stretched flaccid penis length is a better predictor of erect length, but you aren't likely to see that in everyday situations.

If you're studying the size of your penis because you're trying to figure out which size condom to buy, good for you, but you will need to measure your penis when it's erect. Knowing the size of your penis can help you find the right condom, one that neither slips off is too tight, nor is at risk of bursting or breaking.

Penis Size and Sexual Satisfaction

Studies have routinely shown that penis length and sexual satisfaction are not related for either males or females. Also, many males think their penises are smaller than they actually are since they are viewing them from above.

A 2017 survey published in the Journal of Sexual Health reported that 56.5 percent of women are able to achieve orgasm irrespective of penis size, while 35.7 percent are able to do so with an average or longer penis size.

Teenage Penis Size

If you're a teenage boy and you're worried about your penis size, there's no need to be. Penis size is very rarely a medical issue and there's a range of what's considered average. Not only that, your penis will grow a lot over the course of your teen years.

Depending on when you started puberty, a penis may only grow to its full length in your later teens. Someone who started puberty at 10 may reach their full length by 14, while those who started late may continue to grow until 18 or 19.

A Word From Verywell

Despite instincts to the contrary, you should never worry about what size your penis "should" be. Instead, make a note of what size it is and work with that.

Use that information to highlight your strengths and to more effectively protect yourself and your partner. In the end, all of that is what really matters, not a meaningless number. And the reality is that whatever your size, there are really no safe, effective options for making a change.
