Pads to Prevent Hip Pointer Injury

A hip pointer injury is an extremely painful, acute injury to the iliac crest of the pelvis. The bone and overlying muscle are often bruised, and the pain can be intense. Pain may be felt when walking, laughing, coughing, or even breathing deeply. Hip pointers generally occur in sports with a high risk of a direct impact on the iliac crest from either a collision or a hard fall. The sports most commonly associated with a hip pointer injury include football, hockey, lacrosse, soccer, and snowboarding.

Hip Pointer Prevention

In many cases, it's not entirely possible to prevent a hip pointer. However, developing appropriate skills and techniques can reduce an athlete's risk of a fall. And following the rules and regulations of a sport may help reduce the number and severity of collisions that contribute to hip pointer injuries.

The most important thing an athlete can do to prevent a serious injury is to wear the appropriate protective equipment for their sport. And the most important piece of safety gear for preventing a hip pointer injury is hip pads. Hip pads designed specifically for a sport can dramatically reduce the risk and severity of a hip pointer injury.

What Are Hip Pads?

Traditional hip pads are tough, thin, lightweight plastic protective pads that are worn under the pants and cover the hips from the upper thigh to the iliac crest. These pads often fit right into a special sleeve in football and hockey pants to cover the right area and to prevent the pads from moving.

Today there are a variety of hip and thigh pads that are built right into tight compression shorts or "girdles" where the padding is placed in a variety of strategic patterns for many sports including motocross, baseball, football, skateboarding, mountain biking, and many others. Hip and thigh pads are generally available at many sporting goods and specialty stores and can be used by athletes of nearly any sport that has a high risk of falls or collisions and hip injuries.

How to Properly Fit a Hip Pad

If you are building compression shorts with built-in hip and thigh pads, be sure the padding comes up high enough to come up over the crest of the hip bone. Many such built-in pads protect the thigh, tailbone and lower hip only, but to prevent a hip pointer, the padding needs to cover the iliac crest.
