Is Your Superbowl Becoming Super-Stressful?

Avoid Stressing about What to Eat and Drink by Following These Tips

Feeling stressed about the big game? Even if you're not a football fan, you may be worried about what to eat and drink during the Superbowl party. Typically, Superbowl food is high in calories, fat, and carbohydrates. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, Superbowl is the second highest day of food consumption in the United States. On average, spectators take in about 1,200 calories of snacks. If you are someone with diabetes, this could be dangerous because foods high in carbohydrates can leave your blood sugars soaring. But, don't worry - you can still enjoy Superbowl without sabotaging your diet or sending your sugars into a frenzy.

Make it About the Company and the Event

We tend to revolve parties and events around what we are going to eat and drink, and while it's fun to do that, you don't have to go overboard. Go light on the apps and snacks. Instead of piling up your plate with nachos, potato chips, pretzels, pigs in blankets, french fries, and other high carbohydrate foods, pick one food indulgence and load the rest of your plate with cut up crudites and dip it like guacamole. Give yourself a rule to limit your appetizers to one plate and stick to that. You can still enjoy some things you don't get to eat all the time, but by placing food on a plate and sitting down to enjoy it, you can watch the game or engage in conversation and not over do it.

Drink Wisely

It's fun to have a few drinks while enjoying sports, but if you have diabetes, you must drink wisely. Not only does alcohol contain excess calories, alcohol can cause your blood sugar to drop especially if you have not eaten. Get in a Workout on Game Day

If you plan on eating more than usual, doing some exercise on game day will help to burn calories and lower your blood sugars. Take a fun exercise class, head out for a brisk walk or do some resistance exercise. Any exercise is better than none. Make a game day playlist and suit up. Nothing says competition better than some good tunes. You may actually feel so good that you don't even feel like snacking or noshing on junk - that's the power of exercise. Bring a Dish to the Party

It's polite and thoughtful to bring something to a party. Why not bring something that is healthy and tasty? I'd bet that you will not be the only one eating it either. People will choose a healthy option if its there. The problem is when there are no healthy choices, it makes navigating the buffet table a very difficult task. Offer to make a bean dip, a healthy chili, guacamole, chicken skewers, a mixed salad or a vegetable platter. =
