James has written for CNNfn, Departures, POZ, Advocate, Everyday Health, Gay Pages, Exit, OUT, South African Journal of Infectious Diseases, South African Medical Journal, South African Journal of HIV Medicine, and the Medical Journal.
James has worked with community-based HIV organizations since 1989, including Terrence Higgins Trust in London, San Francisco AIDS Foundation, and AIDS Project Los Angeles (participating in its annual Commitment to Life galas).
James previously held a faculty position with the USAID-funded Foundation for Professional Development, participating in South Africa’s historic antiretroviral roll-out as a nurses’ training facilitator and lecturer.
After 17 years in South Africa, James returned to his home state of Texas where he lives with his husband Dennis, an HIV specialist and co-founder of the Southern African HIV Clinician Society, in the city of Austin.
After pursuing a communications degree at Texas Christian University, James completed his Bachelor's degree in film studies at the London International Film School (now the London Film School).
