Resume and CV Writing Tips for Medical Jobs


As a professional, your CV or resume often may represent a prospective employer’s first impression of you as a candidate and your qualifications. Therefore, your CV serves as a crucial job search tool, and resume' writing is an important step in the medical job search process.​

Recruiters and hiring managers see hundreds of CVs weekly. They have no time or interest in reading a long list of adjectives that you put together to describe yourself. Your CV should simply state the facts: who you are, what your education is, what you do and have done. To help organize the resume' writing process, think of your CV or resume' as the tool which showcases your S.T.A.R. qualities!

"S" Is for Simple

Your CV need not have a lot of "bells and whistles" such as graphics, fancy fonts, colors, or formatting. Your CV should be simple, easily scanned by the hiring manager, in an outline form, using bullet points to organize the information in a concise way. Use the same font throughout the document. Your contact information may be centered at the top with the body of the resume' justified to the left margin. Keep any indentations or tabs in line throughout the document.

"T" Is for True, With a Twist

The “T” in the STAR resume’ writing reminds you to stay truthful when representing yourself. The “twist” is that you should present yourself as positively as possible, within the boundaries of honesty. In other words, your CV is the place to list all of your positives, as opposed to listing what you don’t do or won’t do.

"A" Is for Action-Oriented (Accomplishments, Not Adjectives!)

What do you DO at your job – what is your actual experience? If you are a clinician, what type and volume of patients do you see on average? If you are in medical sales or another goal-oriented production role, what percentage of your goal did you typically meet?

"R" Is for Results

Finally, take your action and accomplishments from the previous step, and show how they produced results for your employer. Did you increase revenue by billing more patient encounters? Did you improve quality by changing protocols or reducing errors? You need to spell out how your actions provided results and impacted your employer’s bottom line. For example, if you improved quality or patient satisfaction, perhaps you helped encourage referrals for new patients or return visits and patient loyalty which increased business for your employer.

Once you have composed the content of your STAR resume’, be sure to format it, then proofread and revise for the following:

  • Spelling and grammatical errors
  • Licensure and certifications should include specific dates the license or certification was obtained, as well as states included
  • Employment Dates should include month and year for beginning and ending of each position, so as to show continuity of employment. Additionally, experience should be listed in reverse chronological order, listing current or most recent employment and working your way back through your work history.
  • Education and training details. For clinicians, I would recommend listing education and training first, before experience, as the proper degrees are essential to your career. However, if you are an administrative or non-clinical professional who has experience in your field, I would recommend listing your education after your work history. Again, be sure to include dates for each degree received.
