Dr. Jessen Hickman’s early educational background was in the arts and humanities, and she graduated with a degree in philosophy from Kenyon College, Gambier, OH. For several years she worked in a variety of medical research settings, including laboratories studying mouse models of multiple sclerosis and fragile X syndrome. It was here that she developed her passion for empowering patients and their loved ones through providing better communication and education about medical conditions.

A Word From Ruth Jessen Hickman, MD

I believe that the better patients understand their disease and treatment options, the more they can take charge of their health and make effective choices to care for themselves. I write across the biomedical sciences, but I am particularly interested in the illnesses of the brain (including those studied by psychiatry and neurology). Relatedly, I am also captivated by the study of mind/body medicine, which examines role of thoughts and emotions in shaping our total health. Autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis, are another area of fascination for me. I also have a passion for writing about the ways in which various medical conditions affect men and women differently. More information about me is available at ruthjhickmanmd.com.
