Finding the right toothbrush for you largely depends on personal preferences, but some available on the market can benefit your oral hygiene above others. Although the American Dental Association says that both electric and stationary toothbrushes are both great options for cleaning teeth, an electric toothbrush has the capabilities to teach you proper brush techniques, which sets it apart. The Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart 9300 Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush is one of the electric toothbrushes on the market that can do just that.

The standard electric toothbrush on the market comes with one-button controls that will then vibrate the bristles of the brush for a certain amount of time, around two to three minutes, before shutting off to indicate you’ve reached the end of your brushing. But the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart 9300 Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush takes it to the next level by being a smart toothbrush that connects through bluetooth to Philips Sonicare app on your phone. 

Although the electric toothbrush is expensive, it delivers with its smart capabilities and ease of use—helping guide the user when they’re brushing. It comes with four different settings depending on one’s personal goals when it comes to oral health, so for someone who is really looking to improve their brushing and oral health, this electric toothbrush could be beneficial for them.

Setup

The Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart 9300 Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush is bluetooth operated that connects directly to your mobile phone through an app. It is not required to use the toothbrush with a smart device, but the app is definitely one of the biggest benefits to this toothbrush.

As setup goes, it’s pretty easy. The electric toothbrush comes charged for your first use, but then it's recommended to charge the device for at least 24 hours for full battery with future uses. Pairing the toothbrush with its corresponding bluetooth app is easy. After downloading the app to your smartphone, the toothbrush's bluetooth capabilities will connect to the app and you’ll be prompted to set up an account as a new user.

Depending on your preferences, you can set up notifications to remind you to brush, replace your toothbrush heads, or recharge your device.

Brush Settings

Another standout feature of the DiamondClean Smart toothbrush is it comes with four different brush modes to target different concerns for the user: Clean, Deep Cleanplus, Gum Health, and Whiteplus, which helps to remove stains—a great tool for maintaining brightness between teeth whitening kits. Additionally, the toothbrush incorporates three different intensity levels. Based on the setting you select on the device, the toothbrush will tell you how long you brush for and which areas of your mouth you brush, if you’re following along in the guided app. The three brush heads incorporated in your purchase are created with sensors to indicate if either C3 Premium Plaque Control, G3 Premium Gum Care or W3 Premium White. Once attached to the toothbrush handle, the device will sense the specific brush head and alter the mode to correspond with the correct head.

Although you can use any setting on the toothbrush with any brush head is on the device, it is recommended to switch to the recommended brush head to experience best results. This can create an added cost, as you potentially have to replace three different heads. It can also make the setup process prior to brushing more time consuming, as you have to switch out head depending on which mode you want to use.

Smart Capabilities

The electric toothbrush is a smart device, meaning it connects with an app on your mobile phone to further guide your brushing. The app guides you as you brush, instructing you on the section of your teeth to brush in your mouth and for how long. The sensors on the brush heads will alert you if you’re using too much motion or too much pressure, which is helpful when learning proper brushing techniques.

Depending on the mode, the app will guide you to re-brush specific areas around the mouth if they require a more thorough cleaning. For example, the Whiteplus mode involves brushing the front teeth for a longer time compared to the back molars, while the Gum Health mode prioritizes the back molars. 

Also included in the app are reminders to floss, rinse, brush your tongue, change your toothbrush head, and charge your device. Additionally, helpful tips and tricks are at your fingertips when using the app. And for an extra $10-$35 fee, you can purchase an evaluative report that will give a thorough overview of your oral hygiene and ways to improve your brushing. For those struggling to maintain healthy oral hygiene habits, this feature can be particularly beneficial.

Ease of Use

The device is similar to other electric toothbrushes in terms of usage. You can turn it on with the press of a button to start brushing, and can easily alter the mode of the brush with another button. The app is also relatively easy to use, especially those who regularly use bluetooth-enabled devices on their phone. Philips Sonicare has made the app relatively simple for the user; once you turn the toothbrush, the app will instantly go to the guided brushing screen.

Arguably the most difficult part about using the device is following along with the brushing directions as you brush your teeth. It can be slightly challenging to decipher why one section that you’re brushing isn’t going as well, thus you’re later told to go back to that section of teeth and re-brush them. But there are tips and tricks incorporated in the app that explain to the user the proper brushing techniques and what you might be doing incorrectly while brushing. 

If you’re a multitasker, this brush might not be for you. The guided brushing forces you to pay attention to the app the entire time you’re cleaning your teeth, especially if you want to know when to move onto the next section, if you’re using too much pressure, or if you’re using too much motion.

Battery Life

Philips Sonicare claims that a single charge will last the user about two weeks when doing regular brushing sessions. But one feature of the device is that it has you go back and re-brush specific areas of the mouth that weren’t brushed correctly during the initial session. Different modes can use up more battery than others, so it may more realistic to expect the toothbrush to last about 10 days between charges.

Accessories

Although the brush is expensive, it comes with all the accessories you need to create the best brushing experience possible for your specific needs. In addition to the brush, the purchase includes three brush heads, a tongue brush, a glass charging container, charging stand, and a travel case. Often an electric toothbrush will come without additional heads or a carrying case, but Philips Sonicare makes it easy for you by having everything that you’ll need for at least the first few months of using the device. 

Although the glass charging cup is nice, it is not easy to transport. But if you’re going on trips that will be longer than 10 to 14 days (the length of the battery life) and want to pack light, you may want to stick with a non-electric toothbrush.

Price

The cost of this device is the largest factor arguing against purchasing the toothbrush. At $200, it might be hard for many to justify spending that much on an electric toothbrush, especially given there are dozens on the market with price tags under $50-$100. Additionally, purchasing replacement brush heads costs about $11 per head. This electric toothbrush is definitely an investment, but its connecting app, real-time brushing feedback, and added accessories make the price worth it.
