As health technology becomes an increasingly established field, the need for a new profile of the professionals who will manage it emerges. Both technical and clinical skills are requisites to developing and guiding the future of digital health. To live up to the current expectations, future health technology experts will need a well-rounded understanding of health care, technology and health economics.

University programs are emerging around the world to prepare you for the challenges and opportunities in health technology. Health technology programs are generally offered at the graduate level, leading to a master’s degree or a Ph.D. These programs attract individuals with a wide range of backgrounds, including IT professionals, health practitioners, engineers and those coming from various life sciences disciplines.

Since many of these programs are still in their infancy, it can be difficult to determine their quality. Their public assessments are usually based on their affiliations, syllabi and accreditations. Currently, only a few programs in the United States specialize in health technology (excluding health informatics). There are many budding international programs as well, so if you are looking for further education in this area you benefit from looking outside the United States.

Health Technology Programs in the United States

Degree title: MS Information Systems (Cornell) and MS Applied Information Science (Technion); two years.

Description: Students follow an interdisciplinary curriculum that is well-defined. There is input from leading hospitals, insurance companies, medical schools and health organizations. The program also focuses on entrepreneurial skills. Students participate in a studio experience where they work on team-building and leadership proficiency as well as developing their digital health products. Graduates of this program are expected to design new medical technology and different mobile health products that will be able to help people and communities.

Degree title: Master of Science degree in Healthcare Technologies Management (afforded from both institutions); three semesters for full-time students, but classes can also be taken on a part-time basis.

Description: Courses are taught in the evenings and cover health-care technologies management and business/management. Students get familiar with the business aspect of health-care technology and also with economic, legal, ethical, and regulatory aspects of medical device development. They also gain skills on how to assess and manage the implementation of technology in health-care settings.

Degree title: Currently, two areas of study are offered—a Medical Sciences MD program and a Medical Engineering and Medical Physics Doctoral Program.

Description: These two influential institutions require little introduction. Their collaboration aims to integrate science, medicine and engineering to solve health-related problems. Students of this multidisciplinary program gain a deep understanding of engineering, physical sciences and the biological sciences, in addition to getting hands-on clinical work. Their learning experience is supported by eminent faculty members from both Harvard and MIT. There is a focus on quantitative methods and interdisciplinary projects.

Degree title: Master’s degree program in Medical Technology Innovation; one year.

Description: In 2012, the University of Rochester launched its Centre for Medical Technology Innovation (CMTI) that focuses on developing medical devices and other health innovations. The center collaborates with the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the School of Medicine and Dentistry and is now offering a graduate program in medical technology. The focus is primarily on biomedical engineering and cooperates with W.L. Gore & Associates—a company that manufactures medical devices and high-performance fabrics. Students in this program spend at least two months in a clinical environment to get a better understanding of the medical milieu. Graduates of the program leave possessing experience in designing new medical technology.

Degree title: Studies are offered to Berkeley’s Ph.D. students from any home department.

Description: This new program of training focuses on the social studies of science, technology and medicine. The program has a theoretical orientation and contributes to the body of knowledge on the origins, growth and consequences of technological advancement and practice. It also addresses some of the challenges and questions of the 21st century. Berkeley’s science and technology studies (STS) program also organizes working groups and events where scholars discuss different approaches and practices from the fields of technology, health, food and the environment.

International Health Technology Programs

Degree title: Master of Health Technology Innovation; two years full-time or a maximum of six years part-time.

Description: The program accommodates students’ professional commitments and offers the option of block/intense studies as well as evening and online classes or a combination of these options. Students are encouraged to choose their classes according to their specific professional background and are expected to work on cross-disciplinary projects. There is an established connection with the University’s Charles Perkins Centre (a renown medical and research institute that focuses on common chronic conditions) and an extensive network of hospitals and health-care facilities. Graduates go on to manage health technology infrastructure as well as take on various supporting roles in digital health.

Degree title: This master’s in health technology assessment (HTA) can lead to a Master of Science degree and/or a postgraduate qualification; 12 months full-time or 24/36 months part-time, online distance learning.

Description: The program consists of three core courses (HTA Policy and Principles, Statistical Methods for HTA, and Health Economics for HTA) and optional courses, one of which can also be delivered face-to-face. Online distance learning allows the candidates to participate without needing to relocate to the campus. Virtual learning is supported by recorded lectures, live seminars and videos. The program should equip graduates with quantitative and qualitative knowledge of health technology so that they can go on to seek employment in academia, the pharmaceutical industry or government services.

Degree Title: MSc Health Technology Assessment (HTA), Pricing and Reimbursement; two to four years part-time, online distance learning.

Description: This program is delivered at the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) which has been recognized as one of the most influential university departments in the United Kingdom for health research and health technology assessment. It is one of the longest-running programs of this type and has a solid international reputation. The program focuses on all the different stages of the HTA process (development, evidence-review, economic evaluation, etc.). This is what distinguishes this program from other alternatives. The program has flexible class scheduling and has been specifically designed for people who are already working full-time in different industries related to health devices, health care and pharmaceuticals.

Degree Title: Degree program in medical and wellness technology; three-year bachelor degree and a two-year master’s degree.

Description: The focus of this program is on diagnostic and treatment methods and devices, as well as information technology solutions for health care. The various courses also provide knowledge on solutions for home care, fitness and health promotion. Graduates of the program are expected to work in different health-related areas as product designers, developers, researchers and entrepreneurs. At the moment, the program is only offered in Finnish.

Degree title: Master of Science in Engineering; two years full-time.

Description: This program offers a combination of academic and practical skills. It is intended for students with a background in health sciences, health care, administration, law and economics. It offers two specialities: health care technology (HCT) and occupational health science and ergonomics (OHSE). Students who choose HCT attend apprenticeships in medical and health-related companies (for example, the world-renowned Karolinska Institute in Sweden), while the OHSE students apprentice at manufacturing companies, state organizations and occupational health services. The curriculum for this program is multidisciplinary and is taught in English.
